USPS....A Thing of the Past?

Starting this August, the US Postal Service will stop delivering mail on Saturdays and the delivery of first class mail.

Unfortunately, delivering mail on Saturdays is costing the USPS more money than it is making doing it.  Less and less people are sending mail anyways these days.  Plus, the fact that it costs the same amount of money to send first class mail across the street as it does across the country, makes first class mail even less appealing.

In addition, most large corporations are using other shipping companies such as Fed-ex or UPS because of more reliability and cost effectiveness.

Some people may be opposed to ending the delivery of mail on Saturdays, but I have no opposition to it.  The fact of the matter is that the USPS is going bankrupt.  Nobody uses it and as stated before, other large carriers are taking away business.

Yes the US Postal Service was a very well oiled machine…. in the 1970’s.

This is the 21st century and people aren’t sending letters to relatives or friends anymore.  They’re getting on their computers and emailing people.

Hmmmmm…. Let’s see.  I could send an email to my cousin and it will get there in a couple of seconds.  Or I could send them a letter, which could take up to 5 days to get to him.  I think I’ll use email.

Basically, the USPS isn’t going to be around much longer, so ending Saturday delivery and first class mail will have little to no impact on anything.

  1. I agree with you that sending letters is getting a little bit old-fashioned, but do you honestly believe there could be a United States without a mailing system? It makes sense to end service on Saturday IF profits on that particular day are declining like you mentioned, but I would strongly disagree with you when you say the USPS won't be around much longer. I think we will always have an option to send mail, and I think it is a needed service. And people still do send letters, even if you personally do not. We will have major issues if our mail service is being forced out of competition with private companies, but stopping mail all together like you mentioned just will not happen.

  2. I strongly disagree with you John. The number of people sending letters in todays world is a minuscule amount. It is simply more efficient and cheaper to send an email, which is why people are choosing to do that instead of send a letter. As I stated earlier, the postal system was very widely used in the 80's and 90's but that's just no the case anymore, which is why the USPS will not be around much longer. If you honestly believe that people send letters these days, you are quite frankly naive and outdated.

    2. John: Mail will be around for a long time, whether it be shipping, letters, tax notices, etc, but not forever.

Collin: Ending the mail service will have a great effect on society if it goes away. Many jobs will be lost, not just including mail mens' jobs, but also other's as well. Mail men pay for gas, mail trucks must be repaired, mail shipping centers need to be kept up to run.

In general: You guys are two bullets firing at each other at high speeds. Yes emails are quicker and cheaper, but are they more heartfelt than a letter? Maybe not.

  3. How is your grandma going to send you money on your birthday? How is your mom going to get the items she purchased online to her house? By email? Exactly. If you think everything that is shipped in the mail can be sent by an email (or whatever modes of technology you think will get things to your house) (aka none) than you haven't thought this one out.

  4. I never said that "shipping" was a thing of the past. It's called Fed-ex or UPS. In case you were wondering, all major online companies use Fed-ex and UPS to ship their items. Private companies like such are simply cheaper and more reliable. So your mom can get her items she ordered online and you can get your money from grandma. Who didn't think this through now?

  5. So basically you're saying shipping will still occur, but sending mail won't? Where are bills going to go? Taxes? Government notices? Jury duty letters? By email? I know for a fact that our government won't run by sending emails that can be deleted with the click of a button and pretended like nothing happened. Mail is never going to stop coming to your front door. It's a necessity that most people (I would say all but apparently that isn't the case) would agree.

  6. Yes I am saying that shipping will still occur because bigger companies will take the place of the postal system because they are more reliable and cheaper. And you must be misinformed because my Dad got and email just last week about jury duty. Maybe you've been living under a rock for the past couple of years but yes government notices do come by email now. Maybe you chould get your facts straight then get back to me.

  7. Last time I checked all government notices aren't sent by email. Some might be as another reminder, but people change email address and delete them all the time. It's much harder to move houses than deleting an email account or email, for that matter. I'm done arguing this pointless topic. Mail will continue to be sent, and that's that. We may be able to replace some aspects of it by current technogy, but I guarantee you mail will always be sent. There are just some things technology cannot replace, and this is one.
